But today, we don\u2019t fluoridate our water, despite decades of scientific consensus and clear evidence that it prevents cavities, reduces healthcare costs, and protects the most vulnerable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fluoridate Kingston is a campaign to change that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We propose a <strong>cost-free engineering study<\/strong>, funded by New York State, to evaluate how Kingston can safely and effectively fluoridate its water supply. If the study is favorable, the City can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.ny.gov\/funding\/rfa\/20171\/\">pursue grant funding<\/a> for equipment and implementation, with little or no cost to city taxpayers.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-genesis-blocks-gb-columns gb-layout-columns-2 gb-2-col-equal gb-has-custom-background-color gb-columns-center alignfull\" style=\"padding:8%;background-color:#b3e8db\"><div class=\"gb-layout-column-wrap gb-block-layout-column-gap-2 gb-is-responsive-column\" style=\"max-width:1366px\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-genesis-blocks-gb-column gb-block-layout-column gb-is-vertically-aligned-center\"><div class=\"gb-block-layout-column-inner\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Kingston Should Fluoridate Our Water Supply<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Fluoridation reduces cavities by 25 to 60%<\/strong>.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It <strong>lowers dental costs<\/strong> for families by reducing the need for fillings, root canals, and extractions.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It\u2019s <strong>safe, effective, and endorsed<\/strong> by every major medical and dental authority, from the CDC and WHO to the American Dental Association.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Kingston\u2019s natural water contains only <strong>0.3 parts per million<\/strong> of fluoride, far below the optimal level of <strong>0.7 ppm<\/strong> for cavity prevention.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearly <strong>90% of Westchester County<\/strong> residents have fluoridated water. In Ulster County, it\u2019s just 3%. Yet Kingston never adopted fluoridation itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why not?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The answer is a tangle of <strong>Cold War fears<\/strong>, <strong>conspiracy theories<\/strong>, <strong>anti-government sentiment<\/strong>, and decades of <strong>local political hesitancy<\/strong>. Despite support from local health authorities, medical societies, and community advocates, efforts to fluoridate Kingston\u2019s water were repeatedly blocked by misinformation and political fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The result? An estimated <strong>20,000\u201325,000 more cavities<\/strong> for Kingston children over the past 80 years. Countless hours of pain, unnecessary dental visits, and millions in treatment costs, all preventable.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-genesis-blocks-gb-columns gb-layout-service-2 gb-layout-columns-1 one-column gb-has-custom-background-color gb-columns-center alignfull\" style=\"padding:8%;background-color:#ffffd6\"><div class=\"gb-layout-column-wrap gb-block-layout-column-gap-2 gb-is-responsive-column\" style=\"max-width:1366px\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-genesis-blocks-gb-column gb-block-layout-column\"><div class=\"gb-block-layout-column-inner\">\n<div style=\"margin-bottom:5%\" class=\"wp-block-genesis-blocks-gb-container gb-block-container\"><div class=\"gb-container-inside\"><div class=\"gb-container-content\" style=\"max-width:700px\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center has-large-font-size\">A Path Forward<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Fluoridating Kingston\u2019s water begins with a <strong>state-funded engineering feasibility study<\/strong>. Here&#8217;s how it can work:<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-genesis-blocks-gb-columns gb-layout-columns-4 gb-4-col-equal\" style=\"margin-bottom:3%\"><div class=\"gb-layout-column-wrap gb-block-layout-column-gap-3 gb-is-responsive-column\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-genesis-blocks-gb-column gb-block-layout-column\"><div class=\"gb-block-layout-column-inner\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Common Council Resolution<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Kingston Common Council passes a resolution requesting the Water Department conduct a fluoridation study.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-genesis-blocks-gb-column gb-block-layout-column\"><div class=\"gb-block-layout-column-inner\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Grant Application<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Water Department, supported by the City\u2019s Grants Office, applies to the <strong>New York State Department of Health<\/strong> for a <strong>Community Water Fluoridation Engineering Study Grant<\/strong> (up to $50,000).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-genesis-blocks-gb-column gb-block-layout-column\"><div class=\"gb-block-layout-column-inner\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Feasibility Study<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Engineers assess Cooper Lake and Kingston\u2019s water infrastructure to determine the technical and financial requirements for adding fluoride.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-genesis-blocks-gb-column gb-block-layout-column\"><div class=\"gb-block-layout-column-inner\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.
